Source and verification
This article explains family 150 of the October 6, 2026 OpenAI collection. Research conclusions are attributed to its manuscripts. The review covers statements, introductions, and selected proof mechanisms; it is not an independent verification of the complete proofs.
🏷️ The full phase space of a triangular billiard
In a nondegenerate Euclidean triangle , a unit-speed particle moves straight and reflects specularly at open sides. Trajectories hitting a vertex in either time direction are removed; this exceptional set has measure zero.
The invariant probability on position and direction is
Ergodicity means that every measurable set invariant under all flow times has measure zero or one. Weak mixing means that the product of the flow with itself is ergodic for .
These are statements about the full position-direction phase space. They differ from ergodicity of a directional flow on an invariant surface obtained by unfolding a rational polygon.
🏷️ The two manuscript statements
The September paper claims full-flow ergodicity whenever at least one angle of is irrational relative to . No genericity, Diophantine approximation condition, or symmetry restriction is imposed. (OpenAI, 2026)
Stronger statement in the October companion
The unit-speed billiard flow of every nondegenerate triangle with at least one angle irrational relative to is weakly mixing for normalized Liouville measure. (OpenAI, 2026b)
In the angle-parameter region , the rational triangles form a countable set. The claim therefore includes almost every triangle, but is stronger because it specifies every irrational one.
Weak mixing does not imply ordinary mixing, nor a quantitative rate of convergence of correlations. Neither statement says that every individual trajectory equidistributes.
🏷️ The rational obstruction
If all angles are rational multiples of , reflections generate only finitely many possible direction changes from an initial direction. There are nonconstant functions of direction invariant under those changes, and such functions remain constant along billiard trajectories.
For example, when the reflection angles have a common denominator, suitable trigonometric functions with a corresponding multiple frequency are invariant under the finite collection of rotations and reflections. This gives a nonconstant invariant observable on the full phase space, ruling out ergodicity there.
The irrational-angle hypothesis removes this elementary obstruction. It does not by itself establish ergodicity, because an invariant measurable function could depend on position and need not be smooth.
🏷️ The flat double and the missing derivative
Glue two copies of the triangle along corresponding sides. Reflections become straight geodesic motion on a flat surface with cone points at the vertices.
On its unit tangent bundle, let differentiate along the geodesic direction and along the perpendicular parallel direction. Away from cone points these vector fields commute.
An invariant function satisfies in a weak sense. A flow eigenfunction satisfies
Neither equation initially gives . Assuming transverse Sobolev regularity would remove the principal difficulty without proving it.
The September manuscript expands bounded invariant functions into angular Fourier modes. Local smoothing away from cone points and cutoff estimates bound the gradient of each coefficient. Individual bounds do not imply square summability across all angular modes. (OpenAI, 2026a)
🏷️ Two limits and transverse rigidity
A tail of angular modes has an derivative involving only endpoint coefficient derivatives. The proof tests this relation against long orbit averages supported on segments avoiding the cone points.
There are two approximation parameters. First, with the discarded measure fixed, smoothing tends to zero and produces a bounded weak limit satisfying the exact local transport equation. Applying the coefficient estimate again gives a new bound independent of the discarded-measure parameter. Only then is that second parameter removed.
This order is what allows the starting function to be merely measurable. The resulting endpoint pairings force coefficient gradients to vanish. Parallel coefficients must also respect the angular rotation around cone points; one irrational angle eliminates all nonzero modes. Connectedness makes the remaining coefficient constant.
The weak-mixing companion extends the estimate to real spectral parameters. Summing consecutive coefficient-energy identities makes the terms involving telescope. The final estimate is
Since , this forces . (OpenAI, 2026b)
🏷️ Reflection eliminates nonzero eigenfrequencies
In the triangle interior, the two differential relations make an eigenfunction a plane wave:
Place an irrational vertex at the origin. Reflections in its two incident sides impose invariance of the amplitude under an irrational rotation of direction. A measurable rotation-invariant amplitude is constant almost everywhere.
Reflection in the third side contributes a nonconstant direction-dependent phase unless . The boundary matching therefore rules out every nonzero eigenfrequency. At zero frequency the earlier ergodicity argument leaves only constants.
The standard spectral criterion for a probability-preserving flow then gives weak mixing. The crucial analytic step is obtaining the transverse derivative and its vanishing before using this elementary reflection geometry.
🏷️ Spectral consequences and scope
The ergodicity paper also applies established billiard spectral theorems to obtain interior and boundary quantum ergodicity and density-one nodal-domain consequences under the stated eigenbasis hypotheses. These are separate transfers from classical ergodicity, not an assertion that every eigenfunction equidistributes.
The repository’s family scope page describes the earlier ergodicity theorem despite its broader weak-mixing heading. The later eigenfrequency argument must therefore be distinguished from that documented selection.

Consecutive Fourier indices make the spectral correction telescope
For the flat double, let and let be the angular Fourier coefficients of a spatially smoothed, compactly supported function. In a flat chart write and . Integration by parts away from the cone points gives equal norms .
Put and . The coefficient recurrence for yields
Summing over every consecutive index from to leaves at the lower endpoint and makes the terms telescope. Summing only one parity class would fail to cancel the spectral correction. If vanishes outside a spatial set , Cauchy–Schwarz and give
This is the localized energy estimate of the weak-mixing companion. (OpenAI, 2026b)
Cone cutoffs control individual coefficients without assuming full regularity
Near a cone point, an annulus of radius comparable to has area . Smooth a bounded local solution at spatial scale , and multiply by a cutoff vanishing near the cone tips. Its derivative has size on those annuli. Because smoothing commutes with the flat transport operator locally, the defect is supported only where the cutoff changes.
Both and the restricted gradient have pointwise size there. The square-root area factor cancels the inverse scale, leaving bounded norms. The localized inequality therefore bounds each independently of and . Weak compactness for a fixed coefficient, followed by lower semicontinuity, gives its distributional gradient.
A uniform bound for each coefficient does not bound their sum. The subsequent long-orbit and two-limit argument is needed to obtain the summed energy inequality. It first removes smoothing at fixed discarded measure, then reapplies the local coefficient estimate to the exact weak limit before removing the discarded measure. The source’s result , together with , then forces . The earlier ergodicity manuscript supplies the zero-frequency version of this analytic strategy. (OpenAI, 2026a)
Reflection identities require no boundary trace
From and , the spatial gradient is . Removing that phase gives in the triangle interior. Across a side whose affine reflection is , an open crossing chart gives
almost everywhere in direction. Both expressions are compared on open chart regions, so a trace of the original merely measurable function on the side is unnecessary.
Put the irrational vertex at the origin. Its two incident sides have , so their combined rotation through leaves invariant. Fourier coefficients obey ; irrationality makes all nonzero coefficients vanish. Thus is constant. The third side has , and a nonzero constant would require for all directions. Since fills an interval, this forces .
Finally, an arbitrary eigenfunction can be replaced by . This bounded injective transformation commutes with unit-complex multiplication, so it preserves the eigenfrequency and allows the bounded argument to apply. The exclusion of all nonconstant eigenfunctions, combined with the strongly continuous flow’s spectral criterion, gives weak mixing on the full position-direction probability space.

The family scope page describes selected formalization coverage. Despite its weak-mixing heading, the scope selects the earlier ergodicity theorem, together with the almost-everywhere flow construction and measure preservation. It does not include the later exclusion of nonzero eigenfrequencies. No Lean build, axiom audit, or manuscript-to-formal-statement equivalence check was performed for these notes.
